At the center of the mesmerizing rolling fields, resided a shepherd boy. His being was essentially unadulterated, simple, and honest. His main role was essentially to look after his flock of ewes.
Their low murmuring and the whispering of the breezes through the lone tree on the peak were his only associates. Day after day, looking out for his responsibilities inculcated in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.
Yet, there were occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for companionship. In one such instance from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a naughty plan.
Narratives of predators hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the town. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a prank on the villagers.
One afternoon he dashed into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills to help but read more discovered nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This prank persisted for a few more days. But, one day, a real wolf did attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the town only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
